Food allergies and intolerances affect thousands of people, and symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to major medical emergencies. Happily, many who suffer from food allergies or intolerances already know about their problem and take steps to avoid the wrong foods. However, many others simply don’t know that they are intolerant to certain foods – so they suffer from unpleasant symptoms, which often they can’t explain until their intolerance has been discovered.

Food Allergy or Food Intolerance?
|
Food allergy
|
an abnormal response to a food triggered by the immune system. Symptoms range from a rash, swelling or wheezing to ‘anaphylactic shock’ - a severe, potentially fatal reaction.

|
Food intolerance
|
- symptoms often resemble those of food allergies, but aren’t triggered by the immune system. Furthermore, symptoms aren’t always immediately apparent and can’t be diagnosed by medical tests, so they can often go unrecognised. Common symptoms include bloating, fatigue, aches and pains.

Common problem foods and symptoms
Wheat and Grains
Intolerance to Gluten (‘Coeliac Disease’) can lead to weight loss in children, as well as sickness and tiredness in adults. Being allergic to the whole grain - not just gluten - can cause asthma, itchy skin and diarrhoea. Always check labels of gluten-free products carefully, as some may still contain wheat starch.
Additives
Certain colourings and preservatives can cause allergic reactions and hyperactivity in children.
Milk and dairy products
Cow's milk protein can cause eczema in some sufferers, whereas others cannot digest the lactose (natural sugar) present in milk. Common symptoms can include headaches and fatigue.
Nuts and seeds
The most common nut allergy is to peanuts - and even the most minimal contact has been known to cause severe anaphylactic shock.
Eggs
Eggs can cause eczema, nettle rash and even anaphylactic shock.
Fish and shellfish
Symptoms range from nettle rash to severe anaphylactic shock.
