Tastes of Anglia has some surprises in store too, including Roast Cashews and Roasted Almonds, Chocolate Chip ice-cream, Smoked Trout pâté and even Toffee Bon-Bons! So explore the Tastes of Anglia - you’ll be amazed at the flavours you’ll discover!
Young Chef 2005
Tastes of Anglia are very pleased to announce the winners of the young chef competition for the eastern region 2005. Entries were received from a range of under 21 year olds some working in industry and some training at the regional colleges. The menu was a hot salad using locally sourced ingredients; the judges were impressed with the imagination and presentation skills shown in the competition.
The judges were industry trained with Suzanne Thorpe of Budgens (the main sponsors), David Glover of Electrolux who supplied the kitchen and Ian Howell of The Swan Southwold who has offered the winners a week’s training in their award winning kitchen alongside 14 international chefs.
The winners herald from Norwich City College, two trainees working together to create a very local and tasty dish, rosemary infused belly pork with baby winter vegetable salad and crispy beetroot. James Phillippo and Daniel Black were very excited to be winning this award and look forward to their work experience at the Swan Hotel.
The runner up to this competition was Haylee Blinco of Barnfield College, Luton. She prepared a very tasty and attractive chicken with lime dish served on a bed of seasonal salad. Haylee also impressed the judges with her technical skills (all part of the judging criteria) Haylee received an etched glass trophy and book tokens from Budgens. This was the first competition Barnfield College and Haylee have entered so they are extremely proud and pleased.
Julie West organiser of the competition said, "it was great to see so many young people enthusiastic and knowledgeable about regional food and drink, the standard of entries was high and the dishes created fantastic. The judges took their time deciding as this was a close call between the finalists."
Jonathon Bayne of Budgens said, "we are very impressed with this event and the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the finalists. It is encouraging to see so much interest in local food and we are pleased to support this competition with Tastes of Anglia."
