July
Budgens´ English apple season has started early with its first delivery of English apples this season from Kent-based grower Newmafruit direct to Andrew Thornton´s Budgens store in Crouch End on Monday 25 July. To celebrate, Andrew offered tastings of the freshly picked fruit to customers.
Discovery apples, the first English apples of the season, typically start ripening around the middle of August. And this year´s crop is the earliest that Budgens has ever seen, ripening in July, a result of this year´s overall fruit season being earlier than usual because of the unseasonably good weather earlier in the year. Says Willie Hamilton, Budgens Trading Director: "This marks the start of the Budgens top fruit season. Budgens is a strong supporter of British farming and local producers and our commitment to British growers and producers guarantees top quality, fresh British fruit and vegetables for consumers."
Tony Frankham of Newmafruit, who hand delivered the apples to Budgens, Crouch End, adds: "This provides a fantastic opportunity for Budgens to extend the British apple season and build on the great work of continuing to raise the profile of British product in store."
