Our food policies

  • Our environmental policies

At Budgens, in partnership with The Musgrave Group, we have a long established record of acknowledging and managing our environmental and social responsibility. We also endeavour to ensure that these same values are embedded in our trade with direct suppliers, especially those supplying Own Brand products.

Our environmental reports and policy documents are available for download here >>

  • No GM for Budgens Own Brand

Budgens has eliminated all genetically modified ingredients and additives from our Own Brand range of products in response you your concerns about the GM issue.

We will continue to work with our suppliers to ensure that this policy is maintained.

  • Fairtrade

Fairtrade products are grown by small farmers and producers in third world countries. The aim of Fairtrade is to guarantee these growers a ‘minimum price’ for their products, to help them build a sustainable future for themselves, their families and the local communities they live in.

At Budgens we are proud to offer a range of Fairtrade products including bananas, tea, coffee, chocolate, sugar, honey and wine. Why not pop down to your local Budgens, check out the range and support Fairtrade yourself?

  • Less additives

Many of our customers have worries about food additives and for this reason we have put together a list of ingredients and additives that are prohibited in our own brand products:

    • Flavour Enhancers e.g. Monosodium Glutamate. This has been absent from all Budgens products since 2007
    • Hydrogenated Fats and Oils
    • Azo Dye Colours – e.g. E102, E104, E110, E122, E123, E127, E128, E129, E131, E132, E133. All carbonated drinks now contain natural colours
    • Benzoate preservatives e.g. sodium benzoate. Has recently been removed from the carbonated drinks range
    • Antioxidants BHA and BHT

Please check the labels, as whilst we have removed prohibited additives, due to packaging stocks it might be a while before the new recipe is seen in-store.

  • Better nutritional quality

We are continually improving the nutritional quality of our products, and have been reducing the salt content of all own brand products to meet the Government’s salt reduction targets set for 2012.

We also support the Food Standards Agency’s Energy and Saturated Fat Reduction Programme by reviewing the portion size, fat, saturated fat and sugar content of our foods to see where further reductions can be made without compromising on taste and quality.

We also display traffic light labelling on our packs of processed foods e.g. sandwiches, ready meals, pizzas etc. in line with the Food Standards Agency system. This gives you the information you need to make a healthier choice, as these labels make it easy to see the calories, salt, sugar and fat per serving size.

We also support the ‘Southampton’ study and have eliminated a number of artificial food colours linked to hyperactivity in children.
